2025PaintedChurch - 2025 Painted Church Tour
The Third Coast Chapter and Capital City Chapter met Saturday, May 17, in Columbus at the famous Schobel's restaurant for a great buffet lunch and then embarked on a tour of the painted churches. The "Painted Churches" near Schulenburg, Texas, are a unique collection of historic Catholic churches. The churches feature intricate paintings on the walls, ceilings, and other surfaces, often mimicking the look of marble or wood and often depicting scenes from the Bible or religious symbolism. While their exteriors appear ordinary, the interiors are filled with elaborate art, making them a fascinating destination for those interested in history, art, and architecture.
Many of the churches were built by European immigrants in the late 1800s and early 1900s, reflecting their cultural heritage and religious practices. The churches remain active places of worship today.
After the tour we headed over to Round Top for pie and ice cream at Royer's Pie Haven. A leisurely drive through the countryside (and a Bigfoot sighting) followed as we headed back home. I believe a good time was had by all!
